Malaysian hockey mourns the loss of former national head coach C. Paramalingam, an Olympian and 1999 Best National Coach award winner
THE Malaysian hockey community is mourning the loss of legendary former national head coach C. Paramalingam, who passed away today at the age of 91.
The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) shared the news of his demise through a Facebook post, expressing condolences to the late coach’s family.
“The late coach C. Paramalingam, aged 91, was a national hockey legend and former head coach who led the Malaysian Junior Squad to compete in the 1993 Junior World Cup in Barcelona,” said the MHC statement.
It added that he had contributed immensely to the development of Malaysian hockey.
“The service and dedication of the late coach Paramalingam, who loved the sport of hockey until his final days, and his family will always be remembered and valued by MHC.”
Born in Taiping, Paramalingam featured as a player in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and three Asian Games.
He competed in the 1958 Tokyo Asiad, the 1962 Jakarta games where Malaysia won bronze, and the 1966 Bangkok games.
As a coach, he guided the national team to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Paramalingam, who represented Selangor during his playing career, also won the Best National Coach award in 1999.
As an administrator, he served as a member of the Malaysian Hockey Federation coaching and selection committees.
Paramalingam leaves behind a wife and a daughter. – Bernama
