The Malaysian Hockey Confederation aims for four gold and two silver medals at the 2027 SEA Games, backed by a two-year intensive development and exposure programme.
THE Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) has pledged to deliver four gold medals when Malaysia hosts the 2027 SEA Games.
MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the target includes men’s and women’s field hockey, men’s indoor hockey and men’s five-a-side hockey.
Two silver medals are also targeted from the women’s five-a-side and women’s indoor hockey events.
“We promise to ensure that Malaysia will be able to get four gold medals and two silver medals at the SEA Games here in two years,” Subahan said at a press conference today.
He attributed the confidence to an intensive exposure programme already underway for men’s and women’s squads at various age levels.
A key part of the two-year plan involves overseas training stints for the under-18 squads.
These include a current mission to Perth, with further programmes planned in South Africa, Amsterdam and New Zealand.
“We want the players’ development to continue,” Subahan said.
“We are keeping these players for a period of two years because we want them to mature by the time Malaysia becomes the host.”
He also announced that the National Sports Council will provide financial assistance for the National Hockey Development Programme for the next two years.
Special focus will be given to developing the women’s team to better challenge regional rival Thailand.
The announcement follows the national men’s five-a-side squad winning Malaysia’s first gold at the ongoing Thailand SEA Games yesterday.
They defeated Indonesia 7-3 in the final of the event’s debut at the Games.
The national women’s five-a-side squad, however, lost 1-7 to Thailand in their final, securing a silver medal.
Subahan said that five-a-side success was an important starting point to ensure the format continues to receive support.
