Malaysia’s Muay Thai squad stuns Thailand with three gold medals at SEA Games

Malaysian fighters upset home favourites, including a world champion, to win three golds in Muay Thai at the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok.

BANGKOK: The national Muay Thai squad delivered a sensational performance by winning three gold medals on the final day of competition at the 2025 SEA Games.

The haul exceeded Malaysia’s one-gold medal target for the event held at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

Two golds came from combat events, with Wassof Rujiman and Muhammad Mikail Ghazali Zulfikar both defeating exponents from host nation Thailand.

Wassof secured a dramatic 29-28 victory over Thongchai Huanak in the men’s 54kg category after a three-round battle.

Muhammad Mikail then defeated Suphakon Sirilun 29-28 in the men’s 57kg category despite a hostile home crowd.

The highlight was Angie Yan Jia Chi’s gold in the women’s Wai Kru event on her SEA Games debut.

She upset Thailand’s world champion Thanawan Thongduang to create a major sensation.

Malaysia also bagged three silver medals through Eva Anatasia Warren, Insyad Rumijam, and Nur Amisha Azrilrizal.

The total of three golds and three silvers marks a significant improvement from the 2021 edition.

Malaysia won only a single gold and silver at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam.

The Muay Thai event was not contested during the 2023 edition in Cambodia. – Bernama
