Youth and Sports Minister says a collective decision on the games’ status will be made after receiving official feedback from the host state
A decision on the status of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will be made after a special committee meeting on April 30.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said he is awaiting an official notification and feedback from the host state regarding the proposed postponement.
“Any decision involving SUKMA must be made collectively,” he said after launching the High Performance Centre Building and the National Sports Talent Development Plan (MYTP) document.
He stated that the decision requires input from the SUKMA Supreme Committee, executive members from all states, the National Sports Council, State Sports Councils, the Olympic Council of Malaysia, and other bodies.
The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, recently decreed that Selangor SUKMA 2026 should be postponed.
The postponement was cited as necessary due to the current global supply crisis and to await the full completion of the Shah Alam Stadium redevelopment.
On the new High Performance Centre and MYTP, Dr Mohammed Taufiq said the facilities will help prepare athletes for major events.
He highlighted that the centre is equipped with advanced technologies to guide proper athlete and sports development in the country.
The minister added that the MYTP document will serve as a key reference module for ensuring structured athlete development.
