Youth and Sports Minister says silat is a crucial vessel for building youth character and identity, deserving elevation to a higher level.

SUNGAI PETANI: Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari has described silat as far more than just a sport or a means of self-defence.

He said it is a crucial vessel for building youth character and identity, deserving elevation to the highest level.

“We see how silat acts as a medium to unite us all, and as a vessel for shaping the character of our youth,” he told reporters after officiating the national level 2025/2026 Datuk Dr Raja Abdul Majid National Open Cup Silat championship.

He added that his ministry is prepared to meet with all silat associations to chart a strategic future for this heritage art.

Mohammed Taufiq said they will explore initiatives to nurture more silat athletes to represent their states and progress to national and international stages.

The championship, themed Gema Pahlawan MADANI, will see nearly 2,000 participants vie for the top titles.
