Wang shines with stunning 64 as Moutai Singapore Open makes its return

Timothy Prakash

Korea’s Jeunghun Wang made a statement return as he fired an eight-under-par 64 to seize the opening-day lead at the Moutai Singapore Open, marking the event’s comeback after a two-year absence.

The 30-year-old carded nine birdies and a lone bogey at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) — hosting the tournament for the first time in 25 years. Wang, who last lifted a title almost eight years ago, said he’s eager to end his drought after a strong all-round display, especially with his “hot putting” and “solid ball-striking.”

He leads by one shot ahead of Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Gunn Charoenkul, as well as Kieran Vincent from Zimbabwe, all tied at 65.

Kiradech, the 2013 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion, had an eventful round that featured nine birdies but was undone by bogeys on the first and last holes — including a costly mistake into the water on the 18th. Meanwhile, Gunn’s strong start comes at a crucial time as he looks to secure his Tour card for next season after a challenging year hampered by health and equipment issues.

Vincent, brother of International Series leader Scott Vincent, also continued his good form following a top-three finish in Jakarta last month.

Paired with Dominic Foos and Micah Shin, he credited the trio’s positive momentum for his 65. Singapore’s Troy Storm, a 16-year-old amateur, impressed on home soil with a 67 to finish as the leading local player. Meanwhile, Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Kazuki Higa shot a 70, and Scott Vincent, who tops the International Series Rankings, posted a 72.
