IPC shopping centre launches green rewards for sustainability

IPC introduces BYOC rewards, recycling education programs, and double points to promote sustainable living

IPC Shopping Centre is taking its sustainability mission to the next level with a suite of innovative green initiatives designed to make eco-friendly choices accessible, rewarding, and part of daily life for Malaysian shoppers.

Since 2009, the Mutiara Damansara shopping destination has been at the forefront of Malaysia’s retail sustainability movement. Now, the centre is introducing new programmes that transform responsible consumption from an aspiration into practical, everyday action.

New BYOC Programme Tackles Plastic Waste
Starting November 24, 2025, IPC will launch its “Bring Your Own Container (BYOC) Reward Programme” – a timely initiative addressing Malaysia’s plastic waste crisis. With Malaysians generating an estimated 2.4 kilograms of plastic waste per person annually, making the country one of the world’s top contributors of mismanaged plastic waste, the programme offers tangible incentives for change.

Tack Club members who bring their own food containers or tumblers to participating F&B outlets can unlock a RM0.50 discount by redeeming just 5 Tack Points through the IPC app and scanning the outlet’s QR code at checkout. The discount is fully subsidised by IPC, removing any financial burden from tenant partners.

“Our goal has always been to make sustainable living part of everyday life,” said Karyn Lim, General Manager of IPC Shopping Centre.

“Through innovation, partnerships, and education, we’ve transformed sustainability into something tangible and rewarding.”

Education Takes Centre Stage
Launched in 2024, IPC’s Recycling & Buy-Back Centre (RBBC) Team Building Programme has already engaged international schools, Alliance Bank, and Decathlon Malaysia through hands-on learning experiences. The programme offers guided tours, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions designed to empower Malaysians with proper recycling skills for home and workplace.

The initiative reflects IPC’s understanding that lasting change requires education alongside infrastructure. By making sustainability knowledge accessible, the centre is building a community of informed, motivated environmental advocates.

Technology Meets Recycling
IPC’s enhanced mobile app now features a recycling tracker, allowing members to monitor their individual environmental impact. This digitalised approach adds accountability and visibility to recycling efforts, transforming an abstract concept into measurable progress.

The centre’s partnership with Arus Oil continues to support circular economy principles, offering RM2.50 cashback per kilogram of used cooking oil collected twice monthly. This diverts waste oil from drains and waterways while providing financial incentives for proper disposal.

Festive Season Double Rewards
As the year-end cleaning season approaches, IPC will reward shoppers with double Tack Points on selected recyclable materials including metal, aluminium, paper, and cardboard – encouraging households to dispose of waste responsibly during their annual spring-cleaning.

Tenant Collaboration Strengthens Impact
IPC celebrates tenant partners who share its green commitment. All IT Hypermarket collects e-waste for proper recycling, while H&M and Brands Outlet run in-store collection drives for pre-loved clothing with rewards.

Books for a Better World gives second-hand books new life through resale, and IKEA offers mattress removal and recycling services alongside its As-Is Corner, where pre-loved furniture finds new homes at discounted prices.

“Sustainability is most effective when it becomes a shared effort,” added Lim. “Our community of tenants, shoppers, and partners all play a role in this ecosystem.”

Green Building Infrastructure
Beyond consumer-facing programmes, IPC maintains Green Building Management practices including solar PV panel expansion, LED lighting systems, rainwater harvesting, and eco-friendly, food-grade cleaning agents that enhance energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

The Lagom Life Philosophy
All initiatives align with IPC’s “Lagom Life” philosophy – a Swedish concept of balanced, sustainable living that feels natural rather than burdensome. By making green choices simple, accessible, and rewarding, IPC demonstrates that sustainability can seamlessly integrate into modern lifestyles.

As Malaysia’s retail industry evolves toward greater environmental responsibility, IPC Shopping Centre continues leading by example, transforming compliance requirements into a collective movement benefiting people and planet alike.
