Donald Trump files to recoup over $6 million in attorney fees after Georgia’s 2020 election interference case against him was dismissed last year.
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is seeking reimbursement of more than $6 million for legal fees from the dismissed Georgia election interference case.
A court filing obtained by AFP shows the president seeks $6.2 million for attorney fees and defence costs.
The case alleged Trump and his allies conspired to overturn the 2020 election results in the southern state.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis initially brought charges against Trump and 18 co-defendants in 2023.
A judge removed Willis from the case in December 2024 after revelations of an inappropriate relationship with a special prosecutor she hired.
Her replacement, Pete Skandalakis, argued last November that continuing the case “in full for another five to ten years” would not serve the state’s voters.
Skandalakis said the case had been “on life support” for months before its dismissal.
“LAW and JUSTICE have prevailed in the Great State of Georgia,” Trump posted on Truth Social after the dismissal.
He called the prosecution a “witch hunt” and repeated baseless claims the 2020 election was rigged.
The Republican faced multiple federal charges after his first term, including conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.
Other charges involved allegedly hoarding classified documents improperly removed from the White House.
All federal cases were dropped following Trump’s re-election in November 2024.
