Bergson Credits Hard Work for JDT’s Shopee Cup™ Success

Scoring goals comes naturally to Johor Darul Ta’zim FC striker Bérgson da Silva, but the Brazil-born forward insists there is no secret behind his prolific form.

The 34-year-old netted the first hat-trick of the 2025/26 ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ in a 4-0 win over Bangkok United in September, adding to an impressive return of 168 goals in 164 matches since joining the Malaysia Super League champions.

Despite his remarkable numbers, Bérgson credits old-fashioned hard work and mentality for his success. “I don’t have only one secret. I have a key; it’s always to work more,” he said.

“When I score, I need to be prepared better for the next game. Always when I step on the pitch, I push myself to do my best.”

JDT have made a strong debut in the Shopee Cup™, collecting seven points from three matches to sit second in Group B, behind Vietnam’s Nam Định FC.

With fixtures against Shan United and Nam Định still to come, Xisco Muñoz’s side are well placed to reach the semi-finals, while also maintaining a perfect record domestically and competing in the AFC Champions League Elite.

Bérgson also has one eye on a potential showdown with Thai giants Buriram United, who eliminated JDT last season in Asia. “We know they’re our big opponent in Asian football,” he said. “But we have another opportunity to create a new history, to start a new challenge and think forward about the next games.”
