PLUS launches Malaysia’s first ANPR tolling pilot for lane freedom

PLUS introduces ANPR tolling on the Hutan Kampung–Sungai Dua stretch, allowing private vehicles to use any lane via a mobile app.

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists on the North-South Expressway can now experience “lane freedom” through a new Automated Number Plate Recognition tolling pilot.

PLUS Malaysia Berhad launched the initiative for private vehicles along the 87.7-kilometre Hutan Kampung–Sungai Dua stretch.

The company said this pilot is a key milestone towards implementing a future Multi Lane Fast Flow system nationwide.

Registered users are no longer restricted to specific lanes at nine toll plazas along the route.

These plazas are Hutan Kampung, Alor Setar Utara, Alor Setar Selatan, Pendang, Gurun, Sungai Petani Utara, Sungai Petani Selatan, Bertam and Sungai Dua.

PLUS stated the system aims to ease toll plaza congestion and reduce unsafe last-minute lane changes.

ANPR cameras installed at the plazas will capture vehicle number plates for automatic payment processing.

Charges are processed via a mobile payment platform linked to the user’s preferred payment method.

The system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to recognise vehicles under various conditions.

It is designed to account for factors like weather, speed, viewing angles and non-standard licence plates.

PLUS said the system’s accuracy continues to improve over time through machine learning.

To use it, motorists must download the JustGO Malaysia mobile app and register their vehicles.

Users then link a preferred payment method, such as a debit or credit card, within the app.

No additional devices or upfront costs are required for users of the new system.

The JustGO app also provides an e-invoicing facility for added convenience.

Extensive testing of the ANPR system has been conducted since September 2024.

Results indicated faster vehicle detection compared to existing tolling systems.

The cameras offer wider coverage at toll plazas, enhancing detection speed.

Barriers will remain in place during the pilot phase for safety.

Users are advised to maintain speeds of 20 to 25 km/h when passing through toll plazas without stopping.

Existing payment methods like Touch ‘n Go cards, SmartTAG or RFID remain fully operational.

Highway users can continue using these familiar systems alongside the new ANPR pilot.
