MACC seizes RM6.9 million in gold, cash and car in army graft probe

MACC confiscates gold bars, foreign cash and a luxury car worth RM6.9 million in an investigation into alleged corruption in army procurement tenders.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has seized assets worth an estimated RM6.9 million in a probe into alleged corruption involving army procurement tenders.

The seized items include gold bars, a high-performance vehicle and cash in multiple foreign currencies.

A source said the cash comprised US dollars, euros, pounds sterling, Japanese yen and Saudi riyals.

The seizure followed an inspection of a vehicle at a workshop in the Klang Valley, believed to have been left there for repairs.

“Also seized were three 999 gold bars, each weighing one kilogramme, with a current value of around RM1.8 million,” the source added.

Nine gold bars weighing 100 grammes each, valued at over half a million ringgit, were also confiscated.

An SVR vehicle estimated to be worth RM360,000, believed to have been bought with cash, was seized as well.

MACC Investigation Division senior director Datuk Zainul Darus confirmed the seizure when contacted.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 16(b) of the MACC Act 2009.

A former Chief of Army has been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation.

His two wives were also remanded for six and three days respectively from yesterday.

On December 23, MACC officers conducted investigations at the Defence Ministry.

The probe focuses on projects carried out through open tender procurement methods and procurements under the Army’s Responsibility Centre.

On Tuesday, the MACC remanded 17 company directors suspected of involvement in an army procurement tender cartel network.
