One dead, nine hurt in AC explosion at Bukit Damansara Uni

Fatal AC compressor blast at KL university kills contractor, 24, and injures nine others on campus.

PETALING JAYA: A deadly blast at a private university on Jalan Semantan, Bukit Damansara, has resulted in one fatality and nine injuries Monday.

The incident involved an air-conditioning compressor that detonated in a maintenance zone adjacent to the cafeteria on the fourth floor, according to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus.

The force of the explosion was sufficient to cause structural damage to the building’s walls.

A 24-year-old Malaysian air-conditioning contractor was killed in the blast.

Among the injured were two additional air-conditioning contractors who suffered severe injuries, while others sustained less critical wounds, Fadil told media at the scene.

“Injuries varied in nature, including burns and trauma from flying debris, given the explosion’s intensity and the resulting wall damage,” he stated.

Medical personnel evacuated all casualties to surrounding hospitals for treatment.

The injured also included a university administrative staff member and two foreign workers from the cafeteria.

Student casualties were minimized due to the ongoing holiday period, which kept campus foot traffic low at the time of the explosion.

Fadil confirmed that Fire and Rescue Department teams, accompanied by Hazmat specialists, have completed comprehensive safety assessments of the site to eliminate risks of additional explosions.

“The Fire and Rescue Department has verified that the location is now entirely secure, while investigations proceed,” he said.

The emergency response mobilized 38 firefighters, drawing from forensic units, Hazmat teams, and personnel from neighboring fire stations.
