MP Teresa Kok’s defamation case against Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh will go to trial in February after mediation talks failed to reach a settlement.
MELAKA: The defamation suit filed by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok against Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh will proceed to trial after mediation efforts failed.
Lawyer Datuk Sankara Nair, representing Kok, confirmed both parties were unable to reach an out-of-court settlement during a session at the Melaka Court Mediation Centre.
“The trial has been fixed for Feb 12 and 13 at the Melaka High Court,” he told reporters.
The mediation session lasted nearly an hour and was attended by both parties and their legal counsel.
Kok filed the suit in October 2024, alleging Akmal made insulting statements about her in a TikTok video posted on Sept 7, 2024.
She claims the remarks portrayed her as lacking knowledge on halal certification and opposing government policies on Islamic practices.
Kok is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages from Akmal, who is also the Merlimau assemblyman.
She also seeks an injunction to prevent him from publishing further defamatory statements against her.
