Aberdeen fan jailed for throwing seat that injured defender

An Aberdeen fan has been jailed for 18 months for throwing a seat that permanently disfigured defender Jack MacKenzie after a match.

A football fan has been jailed for 18 months for throwing a seat that permanently disfigured a player.

David Gowans, 32, hurled the object onto the pitch after Aberdeen’s 2-1 loss to Dundee United last May.

The seat struck Aberdeen defender Jack MacKenzie as he thanked travelling fans.

It caused a deep laceration to his left eyebrow and an abrasion below his eye.

Gowans admitted culpable and reckless conduct in October.

Sentencing him at Dundee Sheriff Court, judge Alastair Carmichael said his actions were “selfish, stupid, dangerous and utterly irresponsible”.

The judge added Gowans must have known throwing the item could hit somebody.

Gowans was also handed a 10-year football banning order.

He had already received a lifetime ban from Aberdeen Football Club.

His lawyer said his client was drunk and “extremely embarrassed” over the incident.
