MCMC seeks meeting with X over Grok suspension in Malaysia

Malaysia’s communications regulator contacts X to arrange a meeting next week regarding the temporary suspension of the AI tool Grok for misuse in generating explicit content.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has contacted X to arrange a meeting next week regarding the temporary suspension of the Grok AI tool’s functions on the platform.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said several matters still need verification before the meeting can proceed, with MCMC awaiting further confirmation.

“As of 10 am today, MCMC has informed us that it has contacted X to try to hold a meeting next week,” Fahmi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

On Jan 11, MCMC ordered the immediate temporary restriction of access to Grok for users in Malaysia.

The regulator cited repeated misuse of the tool to generate pornographic content and the presence of obscene material and non-consensual manipulated images involving women and children.

This action was taken despite regulatory notices being issued to X Corp and xAI LLC.

In a separate development, Fahmi said the Online Safety Committee held discussions yesterday focusing on artificial intelligence challenges and regulatory sandbox mechanisms.

The discussions included action against Grok following its failure to ensure user safety in Malaysia.

“Several issues were discussed to enable the committee to move quickly and actively understand emerging challenges, including AI technology,” he said.

He added the committee would play a key role in overseeing and defining online harm to guide MCMC’s enforcement actions.

The aim is to make the internet safer for children and families.

The meeting at MCMC headquarters was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Online Safety Committee chairman Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim.

The committee was established as the country’s highest strategic advisory body on online safety.

This aligns with the enforcement of the Online Safety Act 2025, which came into effect on Jan 1.

A regulatory sandbox is a controlled testing framework used in the technology sector.

It allows stakeholders to trial new approaches before full implementation, letting regulators assess effectiveness and risks while industry players adapt to legal
