Enforcement agencies will act against foreigners misusing social visit passes to work, with monitoring coordinated by the Home Ministry following a Cabinet directive.
PUTRAJAYA: Enforcement agencies will take action against foreigners misusing social visit passes to work in Malaysia.
The move follows a directive from the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said monitoring will be coordinated by the Home Ministry.
He stated the Cabinet discussed issues raised by the business community regarding this abuse across various sectors.
The move specifically targets visitors who use their passes to work or conduct business illegally.
The Home Ministry has previously committed to a three-tier approach to combat immigration facility misuse.
Separately, Fahmi met with members of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC).
He described the meeting as a significant milestone in establishing the council.
Council members indicated they need time to set up basic administrative arrangements.
They committed to managing issues related to the journalists’ code of ethics and a public complaint mechanism afterwards.
Fahmi also briefed the MMC on the RM30 million Media Innovation Fund.
The fund’s first phase has concluded to assist media organisations with digitalisation efforts.
He said new technology, including AI, is intended to support, not replace, media practitioners.
Fahmi also requested the MMC be given a significant role during National Journalists’ Day in June.
