Perkeso mobilises Prihatin Squad to assist victims of Bukit Damansara university blast, with two eligible for temporary disability benefits.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) has mobilised its Prihatin Squad to assess assistance for victims of a private university explosion in Bukit Damansara.

The blast last Monday claimed the life of a student and injured several others.

Perkeso confirmed two injured individuals are contributors under its LINDUNG Pekerja scheme and are eligible for Temporary Disability Benefits.

The eligible victims are lecturer Teh Wee Leon, 32, and contractor Liew Yeng Chen, 55.

“Perkeso will also examine other forms of assistance that may be extended to the victims,” the organisation said in a statement.

It hopes this support will ease the burden on victims and their families following the tragic incident.

Perkeso will contact the employers of the affected individuals directly to report the accident and facilitate the benefits application process.

Further checks revealed three other injured victims were not registered as Socso contributors.

These victims comprised maintenance contractors and canteen workers, while the remaining victims were students.

“A detailed investigation will be conducted into the employers involved to determine the reasons for the failure to register contributions for the affected workers, excluding students,” Perkeso stated.

Information related to the case will also be channelled to other relevant agencies to ensure appropriate assistance for all victims.

Media reports state one student was killed and nine others were injured in the air-conditioning gas explosion at Help University.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus identified the deceased as Soo Yu Juan, a 24-year-old third-year Mechanical Engineering student from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.

He was undergoing industrial training at the time of the incident.
