Umno party polls to be held only after GE16, says Zahid

Umno will hold its internal elections after the 16th general election, utilising a constitutional amendment allowing an 18-month postponement.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will only conduct its internal party elections after the 16th General Election (GE16).

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this is enabled by a constitutional amendment passed at the 2022 Special Umno General Assembly.

“We will wait until after the general election,” said Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister.

He stated the party has a period of 18 months from the end of an election year to hold its polls.

Ahmad Zahid spoke to reporters after attending a memorandum of understanding and cooperation exchange ceremony for the Agrocommodity, Women in Halal Industry Expo.

The constitutional amendment stipulates a postponement cannot exceed 18 months from the original due date or six months after a general election.

Umno’s last party election was in 2023, where the posts of president and deputy president were uncontested.
