Trump threatens 25% tariffs on Europe over Greenland purchase

US President Donald Trump threatens European nations with tariffs of up to 25% to force the sale of Greenland, targeting NATO allies in an unprecedented escalation.

PALM BEACH: US President Donald Trump has escalated his campaign to acquire Greenland by threatening multiple European nations with punitive tariffs.

In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump said Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland would face a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the US from February 1.

He warned the tariff would increase to 25% on June 1, 2026, and remain until a deal for the “Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” is reached.

“These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable,” Trump wrote.

He argued strong measures were imperative to protect global peace and end the “potentially perilous situation”.

The threat targets NATO allies who have recently deployed troops to the vast, mineral-rich Arctic territory, which has a population of 57,000.

If realised, the move would create unprecedented tension within the military alliance.

It was not immediately clear what authority Trump would invoke to impose the threatened tariffs.

Since returning to the presidency, Trump has unleashed sweeping tariffs on virtually all US trading partners.

Washington uses the measures to address what it calls unfair trade practices and as a tool to press governments on US concerns.
