MIRI: A tragic early morning fire at a wood factory workers’ quarters in the Kuala Baram Industrial Estate has claimed the lives of a couple, authorities confirmed today.

The blaze erupted at approximately 6am at the industrial site located about 40 kilometers north of Miri city, near the Miri-Brunei border.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, emergency responders were dispatched immediately after receiving an alert about the incident.

Firefighters discovered the charred remains of two adults—a man and a woman—inside one of the residential units after extinguishing the fire.

The deceased have been identified as Beraih Skam and Terit Lenjau, both aged 37.

Despite the fatal outcome for the couple, five other male workers and a young boy who were residing in the same block managed to evacuate safely before the flames engulfed the structure.

The fire and rescue department confirmed that all survivors escaped without reported injuries.

The charred remains of the victims have been handed over to police authorities for further procedures.

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with no preliminary findings released at this time.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns at workers’ quarters in industrial areas, particularly those housing employees at manufacturing facilities.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the residential block was equipped with adequate fire safety measures or early warning systems.
