Kelantan sees 19.5% drop in index crime, but violent offences rise

Kelantan’s index crime fell 19.5% in 2025, driven by a drop in property crime, but violent crime and commercial fraud cases increased significantly.

KOTA BHARU: Index crime in Kelantan fell by 19.5% last year, dropping from 2,296 cases to 1,848.

The decline was driven largely by a 24.3% reduction in property crime, which fell from 1,873 cases to 1,418.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the property crime category saw fewer thefts and a sharp 39.7% drop in vehicle theft.

He noted, however, that violent crime remains a serious concern despite a slight increase of 1.7%.

“Murder cases rose from four cases in 2024 to seven in 2025, while robbery without firearms increased by 25% with 60 cases,” he said.

He reported 27,339 narcotics cases with 28,807 arrests last year.

The street value of seized drugs fell sharply by 60%, from RM73.52 million in 2024 to RM29.56 million.

Mohd Yusoff highlighted a concerning rise in commercial crime last year, involving phone scams and e-commerce fraud.

The figure nearly doubled from 1,095 to 2,010, despite a reduction in total financial losses to RM50.09 million.

Separately, he announced that state authorities will resume the demolition of 71 remaining illegal jetties along Sungai Golok on Sunday.

“This operation will target the remaining structures still standing after the initial demolition phase,” he explained.

He noted that there are 223 illegal jetties along the border from Tumpat to Jeli.

Regarding a recent accident in Bachok where a four-year-old girl was seriously injured, he confirmed police have received three reports.

“We have also recorded the statement of the driver involved. A comprehensive investigation is in progress,” he said.

The girl was struck by a reversing Fire and Rescue Department MPV during a department event at a resort.

She sustained severe abdominal injuries and fractures and is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of HUSM.
