Mindef warns against spreading confidential MAF leadership info

Mindef warns against spreading confidential info on MAF leadership, citing threats to national security and disrespect to the King.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Defence has issued a stern warning against the spread of confidential information and speculation regarding Malaysian Armed Forces leadership on social media.

In a statement, Mindef said it takes a serious view of irresponsible actions by certain parties spreading speculative narratives on strategic appointments.

The ministry stressed that circulating lists of senior officers’ names constitutes misconduct that undermines the defence management system’s credibility.

Such actions, taken ahead of the official process, create room for negative perceptions and could affect officer morale.

They may also disrupt the chain of command within the MAF.

“Any appointments and promotions of MAF officers are subject to the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, as the Supreme Commander of the MAF, on the advice of the Armed Forces Council,” the statement said.

“Therefore, any premature announcement is considered an act of disrespect towards the royal institution and the MAF leadership hierarchy.”

Mindef cautioned that openly disseminating confidential or internal information could threaten information security and national sovereignty.

“Parties involved are advised to immediately cease any actions that could escalate the situation, tarnish the image of the ATM, or mislead the public,” it added.

The ministry stated it would not hesitate to take legal action against any party found disseminating confidential government information.

Applicable laws include the Official Secrets Act 1972, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Armed Forces Act 1972, and the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993.

“The public is advised against uploading, commenting on, or sharing such speculative content and should instead refer to official announcements through Ministry and MAF channels,” the statement concluded.
