SARA retail network expansion to benefit 8.1 million recipients and SMEs

The SARA programme’s retail network triples to 10,000 outlets, providing a crucial revenue buffer for SMEs and aid for 8.1 million recipients.

KUALA LUMPUR: The expansion of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) retail network is a significant milestone for aid recipients and small businesses.

The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (SAMENTA) said the move from 3,000 to 10,000 outlets will ensure the RM8 billion allocation this year serves as a safety net for 8.1 million recipients.

SAMENTA president Datuk William Ng said the expansion will also provide crucial support for SME retailers.

“By tripling the number of participating outlets, the government aid will translate into immediate liquidity for SME retailers,” he said in a statement.

He added that it allows them to participate in the digital economy via the MyKad-based cashless system.

Ng noted that 2026 is considered a ‘survival year’ for many SMEs due to rising costs.

The integration of small shops into the SARA programme provides a much-needed revenue buffer for these businesses.

He highlighted that when SME retailers thrive, the entire local supply chain benefits from the multiplier effect.

While supporting the expansion, SAMENTA urges the Finance Ministry and Yayasan MyKasih to ensure a seamless onboarding process for the 7,000 additional shops.

The association called for the process to be free of bureaucratic hurdles.

“We also call for technical support, including handholding the elderly or less tech-savvy shop owners to manage the MyKad payment terminals,” Ng said.

SAMENTA also hopes that reimbursements to these retailers are processed swiftly to maintain their cash flow.
