Ipoh bridge to open temporarily for Thaipusam procession

The Jalan Tun Abdul Razak Bridge in Ipoh will open temporarily for Thaipusam, allowing only kavadi vehicles under three tonnes to pass.

IPOH: The Jalan Tun Abdul Razak Bridge here will be opened temporarily for the upcoming Thaipusam celebration.

The Ipoh City Council has conducted safety tests and deemed the bridge, which is under repair, safe for limited use.

It will only be open to vehicles involved in the kavadi procession from January 31 to February 2.

A condition of the temporary opening is that only vehicles not exceeding three tonnes and carrying kavadi are permitted.

“If any other public vehicles are found using the bridge, the police will take appropriate action,” said Perak Health, Human Resources and Indian Community Affairs Committee chairman Datuk A. Sivanesan (pic).

He stated that permission for the bridge route was granted solely for the celebration and subject to specific conditions.

Sivanesan made the announcement after chairing a Thaipusam coordination meeting.

About 500,000 devotees are expected to visit the Sri Subramaniar Temple at Gunung Cheroh for the festival.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Deputy Minister M. Kulasegaran are expected to attend the celebrations around 10 am.
