A 40-year-old woman was fined RM35,000 for cheating a manager of RM599,100 in a Bitcoin mining machine scheme nine years ago.
KUALA LUMPUR: A 40-year-old woman was fined RM35,000 by the Sessions Court today for defrauding a computer company manager in a Bitcoin mining machine scheme.
Lim Pei Pei pleaded guilty to cheating Tan Hon Ken, 51, out of RM599,100 by offering to sell him a Bitcoin mining machine between December 2017 and January 2018.
Judge Azrul Darus ordered 12 months’ imprisonment in default if she fails to pay the fine.
The offence occurred at a commercial centre unit on Jalan Sentul.
She was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ jail, a fine, or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Izzat Amir Idham urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
In mitigation, Lim, who was unrepresented, appealed for leniency as a mother of four school-going children aged between 13 and 18.
