Turkey is preparing to reinforce its 530km border with Iran if the US launches a military attack, planning increased troops and technology.
ISTANBUL: Turkey is preparing contingency plans to reinforce security along its border with Iran in the event of a US military attack, a senior official said.
The official, who requested anonymity, stated, “If the United States attacks Iran and the regime falls, Turkey is planning additional measures to reinforce border security.”
Washington has not ruled out new military action against Tehran following its harsh response to recent protests, which rights groups say left thousands dead.
A US naval force led by an aircraft carrier has been positioned in Middle Eastern waters, according to US Central Command.
NATO member Turkey, which shares a 530-kilometre border with Iran, has frequently opposed military operations targeting its neighbour.
A 380-kilometre wall along part of the frontier has proven insufficient, the official told AFP.
Current plans focus on increasing technological border security systems and boosting troop numbers, avoiding the term “buffer zone” for now.
