UN chief warns against escalation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expresses deep concern over renewed tensions in Tigray, urging restraint and full implementation of the peace deal.

NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres (pic) has warned against escalation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. He called on all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences through peaceful dialogue.

Guterres is closely following developments where renewed tensions and reported clashes are worsening the security situation. His deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the UN chief is “deeply concerned about the potential impact on civilians and the risk of a return to a wider conflict in a region still working to rebuild and recover.”

The secretary-general urged the full implementation of the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. He underscored the importance of safeguarding the gains made since 2022.

Guterres reiterated the UN’s readiness to work with the African Union and regional partners to help consolidate peace. The Tigray region was the epicentre of a two-year conflict between federal troops and forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

That conflict left millions in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The AU-led peace agreement was signed in Pretoria in November 2022, bringing an end to the deadly fighting.

Reports of clashes in parts of Tigray in recent days have triggered fears of a possible relapse into wider conflict.
