Government allocates RM350 million to upgrade East-West Highway in Perak

RM350 million allocated to upgrade the East-West Highway in Perak, with RM170 million for 17 overtaking lanes and RM40 million for maintenance this year.

GERIK: The government has allocated RM350 million to upgrade the East-West Highway, specifically the section in Perak known as route FT004.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the funding is under the First Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan.

He stated that preliminary work could begin this year, with physical implementation hoped for next year.

Out of the total, RM170 million is earmarked for 17 locations to widen roads into overtaking lanes.

“We will use RM170 million for 17 locations, with RM10 million per location to widen the roads into overtaking lanes,” Nanta said.

He added that 17 locations have been identified to improve safety and comfort for road users.

The minister was speaking during a visit to the highway, including the site of a fatal bus accident in June.

Nanta also revealed that around RM40 million has been allocated for maintenance work on the highway this year.

He said the allocation involves various maintenance works by the Public Works Department and concession companies.

These works include road surface repairs and the installation of safety facilities and lighting.

“Therefore, we have RM40 million or a bit more for maintenance work,” he explained.

The maintenance is being carried out through the concession company Belati Wangsa Sdn Bhd.

Nanta emphasised that the Works Ministry continuously monitors the route’s condition for necessary improvements.

He stated the government would apply for additional funds if needed beyond the current allocation.

The upgrade aims to ensure the route is safer, more comfortable, and more resilient for all users.

On June 9, 15 UPSI students died in a bus accident on the highway at Kilometre 53.

Thirteen victims died at the scene, while two others died later in hospital.
