Anwar urges patience as special committee probes MACC chief

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls for space for a special committee to investigate allegations against MACC chief Azam Baki, stressing the need for a thorough and transparent process.

SHAH ALAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged that a special committee be given space to thoroughly investigate allegations involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

He gave an assurance that the probe would be conducted transparently and openly, without protecting any individual.

“For now, let it be studied first. We need to know the case first — whether it is serious, whether there is a basis — only then will we take action,” Anwar said when met after Friday prayers.

He was responding to questions on whether Azam should be asked to go on leave pending the investigation.

Anwar advised MACC personnel to remain courageous and firm in carrying out their duty to combat corruption.

He said any related issues should not disrupt the overall role of the anti-graft agency.

He added that support for the fight against corruption in the country remains low, whether in Parliament or among certain NGOs.

As such, he stressed the MACC must continue its duties bravely to save the country from corruption.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the government had set up the special committee.

Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesman, said the decision was made at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Anwar.

Bloomberg had previously reported that Azam owned shares in a financial services company.

Azam has stressed that his RM800,000 shareholding was acquired transparently and in accordance with procedures.
