Flood victims in Sabah surge to 3,685 across three districts

Sabah flood victims rise sharply to 3,685 people, with 18 relief centres opened in Pitas, Kota Marudu and Paitan after continuous heavy rain.

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood victims in Sabah has surged to 3,685 people from 1,593 families as of this morning.

This marks a sharp increase from the 406 people from 124 families recorded yesterday afternoon.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee reported that 18 temporary relief centres are now operational across three affected districts.

The flooded districts are Pitas, Kota Marudu and Paitan.

In Kota Marudu, the number of victims rose dramatically to 1,978 people from 925 families.

They are being housed in four relief centres, up from just 290 people yesterday.

In Pitas, victims increased to 1,515 people from 593 families, now sheltered in eight centres.

This district had only 116 victims yesterday.

In Paitan, 192 people from 75 families are taking refuge in six temporary relief centres.

The flooding in all three districts began yesterday morning following several days of continuous rain.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast morning rain for inland areas of Sabah.

Thunderstorms are also possible later in the day.
