UM confers Honorary Doctorate in International Relations on South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for his leadership and global diplomacy work.
KUALA LUMPUR: South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa received an Honorary Doctorate in International Relations from Universiti Malaya today.
The award recognises his distinguished leadership and unwavering commitment to democracy, human rights, and global diplomacy.
UM Chancellor Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah conferred the honour during a special convocation ceremony.
The doctorate acknowledges Ramaphosa’s role as a seasoned negotiator and key figure in South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle.
“He chose peace over revenge and dialogue over division,” the citation noted.
As Constitutional Assembly Chairperson, he helped draft one of the world’s most progressive constitutions.
This charter of equality, freedom and human rights continues to inspire nations globally.
Ramaphosa has also been a tireless advocate for workers, youth and marginalised communities.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir attended the ceremony alongside Science Minister Chang Lih Kang.
UM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman was also present.
Ramaphosa is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s invitation.
His itinerary includes bilateral meetings and the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits as Guest of the Chair.
He previously attended the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit on October 25.
The South African President was present at yesterday’s ASEAN Summit opening ceremony.
He is scheduled to speak at the 20th East Asia Summit and attend a gala dinner tonight.
Malaysia and South Africa established diplomatic relations in November 1993.
Their relationship features strong diplomatic, economic and historical ties.
Both nations cooperate closely at multilateral platforms including the United Nations.
They also work together through the Non-Aligned Movement, Commonwealth and BRICS. – Bernama
