Malaysia urges regional cooperation on climate-resilient roads

Malaysia calls for stronger regional partnerships in technology sharing and smart mobility to build climate-resilient road infrastructure across Asia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has called for enhanced regional collaboration on climate-resilient road infrastructure at an international conference.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi urged stronger partnerships in technology sharing, capacity building and smart mobility solutions among Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia member nations.

He said sustainable and resilient road infrastructure must now be treated as a shared regional responsibility.

“We face common challenges, including climate change, rising costs and ageing assets,” Nanta said in his keynote address at the 17th REAAA Conference 2025 in Goyang, Korea.

He emphasised that collaboration and knowledge exchange can build infrastructure that connects nations while protecting lives and livelihoods.

Nanta outlined Malaysia’s national strategies guided by frameworks including the National Construction Policy 2030 and Green Technology Master Plan.

The ministry is leading a 10-year initiative to transform maintenance into a structured, high-value industry through the National Infrastructure and Asset Maintenance Policy.

This policy introduces a comprehensive framework for sustainable and climate-resilient maintenance integrating preventive measures and technology-based monitoring.

The ministry also plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for Infrastructure Maintenance to strengthen training and research standards.

Nanta highlighted the success of the MYJalan mobile app in enabling public participation in road maintenance.

The app has received over 42,600 complaints nationwide since its August 2023 launch, with 96.7% of ministry cases successfully resolved.

He stressed the need for governments to invest in data and predictive maintenance systems while encouraging cross-border research.

The REAAA Conference 2025 gathered more than 1,000 delegates from 30 countries to exchange ideas on innovation and sustainability in transport networks. – Bernama
