Semi-auto weapon used in Bukit Kayu Hitam commander shooting

Kedah police confirm a semi-automatic firearm was used to shoot at an MCBA commander’s vehicle near the Thailand border; the officer escaped unharmed.

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: Police believe a semi-automatic firearm was used by suspects who shot at a vehicle driven by the Bukit Kayu Hitam Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency commander.

Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said preliminary investigations confirmed two shots were fired at the victim’s moving vehicle from about one metre away.

“We believe the shooter used a semi-automatic weapon as we found shattered bullet fragments,” he told a press conference.

He said the incident involved two suspects on a motorcycle, dressed in dark clothing and wearing full-face helmets.

The victim, SAC Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir, was driving alone at the time.

Police immediately launched Op Tutup to track down the suspects, including at the Durian Burung border entry point in Padang Terap.

Adzli said the incident is viewed as a challenge to all enforcement agencies executing their duties.

“I also call on all enforcement personnel to remain vigilant. Safety must be the priority in carrying out duties,” he said.

The incident occurred at 5.40 am on the Masjid Muhajirin slip road, about one kilometre from the Malaysia-Thailand border.

A Proton X70 driven by Mohd Nasaruddin was shot at by the two men on the motorcycle.

Mohd Nasaruddin, who was on his way to perform Subuh prayers at the mosque, escaped unharmed.
