Dr Wan Azizah urges strengthening community spirit and transparency in charitable giving at RM2.1 million fund handover ceremony
KUALA LUMPUR: The spirit of helping one another and giving back to the community must continue to be strengthened in building a MADANI nation grounded in human values and integrity.
Bandar Tun Razak member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said efforts to help the needy would be more effective if the public had confidence in charitable organisations.
She stressed the importance of transparency in managing public funds during her speech at the fund handover ceremony by Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng.
“Helping others is an essential value in life that we want to instil in our country to lighten the burden of those in need,” she said at Hospis Malaysia in Cheras.
The ceremony saw the handover of donations totalling RM2.1 million to five beneficiaries including the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association and New Era University College.
Other recipients included Hospis Malaysia, the National Cancer Council of Malaysia, and the National Kidney Foundation.
Dr Wan Azizah expressed her appreciation to Lim for his commitment to fulfilling his promise to return public contributions to the community.
She said this reflected a sense of responsibility and concern in line with the MADANI spirit.
“Thank you very much to Yang Berhormat Lim for choosing to share for the benefit of the people,” she added.
Dr Wan Azizah urged more charitable organisations to demonstrate good performance to maintain public trust.
She emphasised the importance of supporting chronic patients including those battling cancer and kidney disease.
The Prime Minister’s wife commended Hospis Malaysia for its dedication to providing quality community healthcare.
Media reports had earlier indicated that Lim pledged to channel all public donations received for his defamation case to welfare organisations.
The Court of Appeal ordered Lim to pay RM75,000 in damages instead of the original RM2 million awarded to MonSpace and its founder Datuk Seri Jessy Lai Cha Suang for defamation.
Lim confirmed the RM2 million donated today came from public contributions raised to help him within just three days.
“With all humility and sincerity, I fulfil my promise to return all the public donations I received to the community,” he said.
