New Kapit ferry service to ease daily travel for residents

A new RM23.5 million ferry service at Nanga Tulie crossing will improve transport for Kapit residents, charging only RM1 per trip for up to 24 vehicles.

KAPIT: A new ferry service at the Nanga Tulie crossing on Batang Rajang is set to significantly improve daily travel for residents in the Kapit Division.

The RM23.5 million project, a Sarawak state government initiative, will be capable of carrying up to 24 vehicles at a time.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project aims to provide safer, more orderly, and efficient transportation facilities.

“For the people in Kapit, the river is not just for the view but a lifeline that connects them to workplaces, schools, service centres and agricultural areas,” he said in a Facebook post.

He officiated the project’s groundbreaking ceremony, noting that residents have long had to cross the river for daily activities like work and school.

The project includes the construction of ferry landing facilities and is expected to benefit 33 longhouses from Nanga Tulie to Pekan Merit.

It will also facilitate the movement of students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Encheremin and SK Ulu Pelagus.

Nanta, who is also the Kapit MP, said the facility will help expedite community affairs like transporting goods and travel.

He added that it has the potential to open up more economic opportunities for local residents.

The project will be implemented by Rambungan Maju Sdn Bhd using a design and build approach.

To ensure accessibility, the ferry service will charge a fee of only RM1 per trip.
