Sarawak Premier receives Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun honour

Japan confers Order of the Rising Sun on Sarawak Premier Abang Johari for state’s green energy and low-carbon economy initiatives.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Japanese Government’s conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star upon Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledges Sarawak’s advancements in green energy and low-carbon economic development.

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari expressed his gratitude to the Japanese Government and Emperor Naruhito while describing this honour as validation of the state’s forward-thinking policies.

He stated that this international award recognises Sarawak’s comprehensive policies particularly within energy, hydrogen, and associated sectors.

Abang Johari made these remarks to reporters following his attendance at the 29th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak convocation ceremony.

The Premier noted Japan’s significant interest in Sarawak’s pioneering work on new energy technologies and zero-carbon solutions.

He outlined Sarawak’s four primary focus areas for 2035 which include renewable energy and carbon-free gas development alongside carbon capture technology and semiconductor advancement.

Abang Johari further emphasised Sarawak’s enhanced reforestation strategy using fast-growing trees that function as natural carbon absorbers and biomass sources for green energy.

He affirmed that Sarawak’s collaboration with Japan demonstrates the state’s correct trajectory toward establishing a green and sustainable regional economy.

The Premier described this recognition as a tremendous honour for all Sarawak leaders and citizens working toward regional green energy leadership.

The Order of the Rising Sun represents one of Japan’s highest honours awarded for substantial contributions to international relations and global progress.

Japan’s Embassy confirmed Abang Johari among recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations announced by the Japanese Government. – Bernama
