The Sun Sport

Malaysian doubles star Tee Kai Wun is playing through a calf injury to chase qualification for the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou.

KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s doubles shuttler Tee Kai Wun is determined to play through a calf injury in his quest to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals.

Kai Wun and his partner Man Wei Chong are targeting the season-ending tournament in Hangzhou from December 17 to 21.

The world number five pair must gather ranking points at the upcoming Kumamoto Masters in Japan to secure their spot.

“We haven’t qualified for the World Tour Finals yet, so we have to play at the Kumamoto Masters,” he said after a training session.

“There are still points to chase, and we must fight.”

The 25-year-old admitted the injury has been emotionally challenging but emphasised his commitment to realising his dream.

He revealed the calf issue was detected before the Finland Open, forcing their withdrawal from that event.

They subsequently returned to competition at the French Open last month.

The Malaysian duo showed strong recent form by reaching the French Open quarter-finals and the Hylo Open semi-finals.

They currently hold third place in the BWF World Tour standings with 84,350 points.

Two other Malaysian pairs are also positioned within the crucial top eight rankings.

Reigning world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik sit in second place with 95,320 points.

Professional pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani occupy seventh position with 72,770 points.

Only the top eight players and pairs in the BWF World Tour rankings qualify for the prestigious season finale.

Each country can send a maximum of two representatives in each category. – Bernama
