Malaysia maintains 54% forest cover, exceeding sustainability pledge

Malaysia upholds its forest sustainability commitment, maintaining 54% forest cover and certifying 5.85 million hectares under MTCS

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continues to uphold its sustainability commitment by maintaining 54% of its total land area under forest cover.

This achievement surpasses the nation’s pledge to preserve at least 50% of its landmass as forest reserves.

Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the country remains dedicated to balancing economic activity with environmental protection.

“Malaysia has committed that we will take care of our forests, and that is why we have preserved more than 50% of our forest area,” he told reporters after officiating the Malaysian Wood Expo (MWE) 2025.

He emphasised that this reflects Malaysia’s dedication to responsible forest management practices.

Johari stressed that the timber industry must focus on creativity, quality craftsmanship and sustainability to remain competitive.

“What is important in the wood industry is, first, we must be creative; secondly, our craftsmanship must be good,” he said.

“Third, we must practise sustainability in the products we sell, and if we have these three, that is a winning formula to export our products abroad.”

The minister highlighted the Industrial Tree Plantation programme’s vital role in ensuring long-term renewable raw material supply.

This initiative reduces dependency on natural forests while supporting downstream industry growth.

As of October 2025, Malaysia has certified 5.85 million hectares of forests under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme.

This endorsement by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification places Malaysia among the top 10 countries globally with the largest PEFC-certified forest area.

“Malaysia stands ready to serve as your trusted gateway to the dynamic ASEAN timber market, with strong trade links, a credible certification system and a solid reputation for sustainability,” Johari added. – Bernama
