Search for capsized boat victims off Langkawi expands to second day

SAR operation for capsized migrant boat off Langkawi continues with expanded area, involving six agencies after seven confirmed dead, 13 rescued

ALOR SETAR: The search and rescue operation for victims of a capsized boat off Langkawi has entered its second day with an expanded area.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency stated the search now covers 255.66 square nautical miles.

The operation resumed at 7.30 am today involving six different agencies.

MMEA deployed five assets including KM SIANGIN, PERKASA 1224, PETIR 81, PERKASA 1226 and CL 415 – SUMS APMM.

Marine Police Region One contributed three assets while the Royal Malaysian Navy deployed KD Ledang.

The Fisheries Department, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Force are also participating with their respective vessels.

The operation began after reports that one of three boats carrying approximately 300 migrants capsized near Pulau Tarutao.

The incident occurred in the waters near the Thailand-Malaysia maritime border.

As of last night, seven migrants had been confirmed dead while thirteen others were rescued alive. – Bernama
