Malaysia and Indonesia defence chiefs vow to safeguard ties from foreign interference

Malaysia’s defence chief calls for vigilance against foreign interference and social media agendas that could harm Malaysia-Indonesia relations

JAKARTA: Malaysia’s Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar has called for safeguarding the bond between Malaysia and Indonesia against foreign interference.

He urged vigilance against attempts to stir controversy that could undermine the countries’ long-standing harmonious relations.

“Vigilance must also be applied on social media and its occasionally mischievous agenda,” Mohd Nizam said during his speech at the Malaysia-Indonesia High-Level Committee meeting.

He jointly chaired the meeting with Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Agus Subiyanto on Tuesday.

Mohd Nizam emphasized that relations extend beyond mutual interest to shared history, culture, and ancestry.

He described the HLC Malindo as an important platform for strengthening defence cooperation with responsibility and professionalism.

“HLC Malindo and the working groups within it remains the main mechanism to empower defence cooperation, align strategies, and manage a common security in general,” he explained.

General Agus Subiyanto characterized Indonesia-Malaysia cooperation as a special and unique bond.

He noted that armed forces collaboration serves as the backbone for ASEAN peace and stability.

The meeting included progress reports from several joint committees and working groups.

These covered coordinated operations, joint exercises, police coordination, and socio-economic cooperation. – Bernama
