As MIC marks 80th anniversary, deputy president says party expands beyond education to nurture entrepreneurs and corporate leaders
KUALA LUMPUR: As MIC marks its 80th anniversary, the party is expanding its focus beyond education to developing entrepreneurs and corporate leaders within the Indian community, said MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.
He said the Indian community is now increasingly active in venturing into business, including through online platforms that have also created opportunities for homemakers to generate income.
“MIC’s struggle in the field of education has borne fruit, and we are now focusing on the business sector — on how to produce corporate figures from among the Indian community,” he told Bernama here today.
Earlier, he flagged off more than 400 participants in a 5km run held in conjunction with the MIC’s 80th anniversary at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, which was simultaneously held across 137 party divisions nationwide.
According to him, education has been the foundation of MIC’s struggle since the party was established in August 1946, based on the belief that education can transform the fortunes of the Indian community and produce quality human capital.
“We believe that only education can change the fortunes of the Indian community, and today almost every family has produced graduates and professionals.
“… and MIC, as a political party, has to date channelled nearly RM227 million to Malaysians in educational financial assistance,” he said.
To ensure MIC remains relevant and continues to engage with the younger generation, he said various grassroots programmes would continue to be organised, including running events, dialogue sessions, and cultural and religious events.
He said MIC has more than 500,000 members and has received over 1,000 applications to establish new branches nationwide, which are being screened and reviewed.
