GRS fields Tan Sri Pandikar Amin and wife Diana Diego in Pintasan and Sekong, marking a first for Sabah politics.
KOTA KINABALU: A married couple will make political history in Sabah’s upcoming state election by contesting under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) banner.
Former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia will stand in the Pintasan state seat while his wife Puan Sri Diana Diego @ Yusrina Sufiona contests the Sekong constituency.
GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed the candidacies during a press conference here today.
Pandikar Amin expressed confidence in his electoral prospects, noting his previous strong performance as an independent candidate.
“I have never left the political stage, always active and involved,” he told reporters.
“I’m confident I can win. In the previous state election, I stood as an independent candidate and got 2,600 votes, lost by only 84 votes.”
He added that all GRS candidates had strong winning potential due to their longstanding community connections.
Parti Cinta Sabah president Tan Sri Anifah Aman, named as GRS candidate for Bongawan, thanked supporters for their continued backing.
“We will continue to fight for Sabah,” the former Foreign Minister stated.
Hajiji, who also leads Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, announced GRS will contest 55 of the 73 available seats.
The coalition comprises six parties including Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, PCS, USNO, Harapan Rakyat and LDP.
Polling is scheduled for November 29 with nominations on November 15 and early voting on November 25. – Bernama
