Kuala Nerus coastal erosion project on track for 2027

Kuala Nerus’ coastal erosion control project is 49% complete, featuring breakwaters and beach nourishment along a two-kilometre stretch.

KUALA NERUS: The federal government is prioritising coastal erosion control along Pantai Batu Rakit through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

The RM20 million project involves constructing 16 breakwater units and implementing beach nourishment works along a two-kilometre coastal stretch.

Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat confirmed the project remains on schedule for completion by January 14, 2027.

“Project implementation is progressing well according to schedule, with 49.46% of work completed to date,” Hanafiah said during the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly debate.

He explained that the project design stems from detailed technical studies analysing wave patterns, coastal currents and sand deposition along the affected coastline.

Hanafiah emphasised that addressing Pantai Batu Rakit’s erosion requires an integrated approach covering coastal conservation from shoreline to river estuaries.

“This approach is crucial as erosion and sand deposition occur dynamically between coastal cells, not limited to areas with protective structures alone,” he said.

Separately, the state government will sign a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia Rail Link on November 24 to promote transit-oriented economic growth along the East Coast Rail Link station alignment in Terengganu.

Works for the initial phase, including site-clearing covering 242 hectares, have already begun this year and will continue into 2026. – Bernama
