PM Anwar affirms Malaysia’s sovereignty, rejects claims of bowing to US in trade deal, and clarifies Palestine stance ahead of G20 summit
BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has affirmed Malaysia’s sovereignty and independence in foreign policy decisions.
He stated that Malaysia has never bowed to any foreign power in determining its foreign policy or trade relations.
Claims that Malaysia would bow to the United States under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade are unfounded according to the Prime Minister.
“The trade deal contains no provisions preventing Malaysia from acting in line with its national security interests,” he said.
“We are bound by our own laws and regulations. We have the right to review or give notice to terminate the agreement.”
Anwar questioned critics by asking why Malaysia would sign agreements with China if it were truly bowing to the United States.
He confirmed his attendance at the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa despite the US boycott.
“I will attend at the invitation of South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa,” he announced.
“I do not bow to US foreign policy. We have our own policy.”
The Prime Minister stressed that Malaysia is a free, dignified and independent nation.
On Palestine, Anwar clarified that Malaysia has never supported the 20-point plan for Gaza.
He said Malaysia has consistently advocated a comprehensive solution for Gaza and Palestine.
“That’s a significant difference,” he emphasized.
“A comprehensive solution means recognising the rights of Gaza and Palestine as a free and sovereign state.”
He also reiterated Malaysia’s position of rejecting Israel’s atrocities in the West Bank.
