Two men charged with trafficking over 3,000 kg of drugs

Two men face charges for trafficking over 3,000 kg of methamphetamine and ecstasy in Kuala Lumpur, with a potential death penalty.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today for trafficking over 3,000 kilogrammes of drugs.

Chew Weng Han, 38, and Liang Kar Jun, 44, a transporter, nodded after the charges were read but did not enter a plea as the case falls under High Court jurisdiction.

They face two counts of trafficking 3,320.69 kg of methamphetamine and 1.438 kg of ecstasy.

The alleged offences occurred at a premises in Taman Gembira here on March 2 this year.

The charge is under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.

If the death penalty is not imposed, the sentence includes a maximum of 15 strokes of the cane.

The court did not grant bail and set June 16 for mention to await the submission of a chemical report.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Vivi’ Asnita Zaina’ Larifin handled the case.

The two men were represented by lawyer Mohamed Ashmeer Mohamed Ashrof Raja.
