Police detain two men for four days over viral video showing chained macaque being assaulted, investigating under animal cruelty and communications laws
KOTA BHARU: Police have arrested two men to assist in investigations into the suspected abuse of a macaque that went viral on social media last week.
Bachok police chief Supt Mohamad Ismail Jamaluddin said the suspects, aged 24 and 28, were detained at the Bachok Police Headquarters at 10 pm when they arrived to have their statements recorded.
“They have been remanded for four days until Tuesday to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.
He explained that the video clip showing a chained macaque being assaulted was recorded by the complainant’s friend before being uploaded to TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.
The posting sparked widespread outrage among netizens across multiple platforms.
The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Animals Act 1953 for cruelty to animals.
Police are also investigating under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network services.
Authorities have seized a mobile phone and the male macaque involved in the incident.
The animal has been handed over to the Department of Veterinary Services for care and examination. – Bernama
