US diplomatic centre in Baghdad hit by overnight rocket and drone attacks

A US diplomatic and logistics hub at Baghdad airport was targeted in multiple overnight attacks, with pro-Iran groups claiming responsibility for the strikes

BAGHDAD: A US diplomatic and logistics centre at Baghdad International Airport was targeted in a series of overnight attacks.

A senior Iraqi security official told AFP that eight separate attacks using rockets and drones were carried out until dawn on Sunday.

“Some rockets landed near the base,” the official stated.

Another security source reported at least six strikes, while a police source said a rocket launcher was discovered in a Baghdad district near the airport.

The airport complex has been repeatedly targeted since the wider Middle East conflict began on February 28.

Pro-Iran armed groups have claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on US interests across the region.

An umbrella movement called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility early Sunday for 21 drone and rocket attacks in the past 24 hours.

The group said the strikes were “against the bases of the occupier” in Iraq and the Middle East.

It has long demanded the withdrawal of US troops from the country.

The US embassy in Baghdad was not targeted for a fourth consecutive night.

This follows a pledge by the influential Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah group on Thursday to cease attacks for five days under certain conditions.

A US State Department spokesperson confirmed the mission “remains open while on ordered departure”.

“Our team in Iraq continues to review all needed actions to promote the safety of US government personnel and facilities,” the spokesperson added.
