Why workplace mentorship is the real driver of career success?

Malaysians share career advice from mentors on visibility, honesty, skills and growth in today’s evolving workplace

WHILE formal education provides a foundation, the insights gained from experienced professionals in the workplace are often what truly shape a candidate’s career growth and long-term success.

In a recent discussion on Reddit, Malaysian professionals shared some of the most valuable advice they have received from managers, seniors and mentors, offering a glimpse into the lessons that have left a lasting impact on their professional journeys.

One user reflected on a senior colleague’s emphasis on the importance of workplace visibility.

“Don’t just do your job quietly. Make sure people understand the value of the work you’re doing,” the senior had advised.

While the user initially believed that hard work alone would lead to recognition, they eventually realised that communicating progress and sharing ideas are equally crucial.

This was coupled with guidance on continuous learning; the user was reminded that as roles evolve or become obsolete, the ability to build new skills and adapt is essential for survival in a changing economy.

Another contributor, Tierslin, shared advice from early in her career that has served as a professional North Star.

She was encouraged never to pretend to know something she did not.

Instead, she was advised to admit when she was unsure and take the initiative to find the correct answer.

She stated that honesty builds trust, whereas providing inaccurate or overconfident responses can permanently damage one’s credibility.

Others highlighted different perspectives on career development.

One user shared that their boss advised against leaving a job solely for a higher salary, warning that satisfaction cannot be measured by pay alone.

Another user, Linktothepastz said their mentor encouraged them to learn Mandarin, describing it as an increasingly valuable “corporate language” that can open doors to better opportunities in today’s economy.

Meanwhile, TheJinxedWizard recalled advice from a supervisor during their first full-time job after secondary school.

The supervisor pointed out that while technical skills are important early on, career progression into leadership roles depends heavily on interpersonal abilities.

According to the advice, strong people skills are what ultimately help individuals move beyond senior positions and climb the corporate ladder.
