PH candidate pledges to transform Merotai into new town

PH candidate Ruji Ubi vows to transform Merotai with recreational facilities if elected, facing a four-cornered contest in the state polls.

TAWAU: Pakatan Harapan candidate Datuk Ruji Ubi has pledged to transform Merotai into a new town complete with recreational facilities if elected in the upcoming state election.

The former Ministry of National Unity secretary-general said he would strive to develop Merotai if given the opportunity to serve as assemblyman after the November 29 polls.

“The people of Tawau are very fortunate, they have a sports complex and parks for recreation but for the youth in Merotai, in Kampung Kijang, in Kuala Merotai, in Semarak, in Bombalai, they have no recreational areas at all,” he told reporters after a walkabout at Pasar Hotspring.

Ruji stated that with special allocations and alignment with the federal government, transforming open areas into recreational spaces was achievable.

He highlighted Prime Minister Datro Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s concern for Sabah’s development and the substantial federal aid and development allocations channeled to the state.

During his market visits, the PH candidate engaged with Chinese community members at Pasar Hotspring and Pasar Sin Onn, distributing pamphlets outlining his vision for Merotai.

Vegetable vendor Voo Choi Kiaw, 76, expressed hope for Ruji’s election, noting the candidate’s ground presence and understanding of market improvement needs.

Another voter, Ho Cook Thai, 64, echoed support for Ruji’s consistent engagement with community needs.

Ruji faces a four-cornered contest against Warisan’s incumbent Sarifuddin Hata, Perikatan Nasional’s Hasan Haris and Parti Impian Sabah’s Rhyme@Reymie Kassim.

Early voting is scheduled for November 25 with polling day on November 29. – Bernama
