Fahmi leads Malaysian delegation to global telecom conference in Baku

Communications minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil heads delegation to WTDC-25, engaging in bilateral talks and pursuing ITU council re-election for 2027-2030 term.

BAKU: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil is leading Malaysia’s delegation to the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025 (WTDC-25) from today until November 19.

The International Telecommunication Union event, hosted by Azerbaijan, carries the theme “Universal, Meaningful, and Affordable Connectivity for an Inclusive and Sustainable Digital Future”.

Over 1,500 participants including heads of state, ministers and high-level delegates from worldwide are expected to attend.

Fahmi will deliver Malaysia’s statement during the conference’s high-level segment on Tuesday.

He will also hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from Azerbaijan, the Bahamas, Brazil, Bulgaria, India, Iran, Samoa, South Africa, Uganda and Uzbekistan.

The minister will witness the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency.

Fahmi is scheduled to attend the ITU Member States Heads of Delegation Celebration Dinner and meet with the Malaysian diaspora in Azerbaijan.

His participation supports Malaysia’s bid to retain its seat on the ITU Council for the 2027-2030 term.

Malaysia currently holds an ITU Council membership for the 2023-2026 term, allowing the country to help shape the agency’s strategic policy direction.

The ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for telecommunications and digital technology, responsible for radio frequency allocation and bridging digital divides globally. – Bernama
